Who we are
What 'Ulu' means
We originally picked the name Ulu quite randomly, simply because we liked the sound of it. Ulu has no meaning in English, only a pleasing melodic intonation. Ulu is like Aum, an all encompassing universal vibration, an energetic wave, rising and falling. Only later did we learn that Ulu, in fact, means essentially to mix things up and fly around in pursuit of divinity, the magical and mysterious source of life. In Sanskrit, Ulu means owl. Like a wise yogi sitting in still contemplation, the owl is able to see through the darkness of ignorance, and swoop down with perfect accuracy to attain its goals.
We define Ulu as Universal Love and Understanding. Together, by embracing diversity and creativity, we all may experience divine union through yoga.
Teaching philosophy
In 2007, school founder Edward Pawlak was a university teacher pursuing graduate studies in international education, and just staring his yoga journey. After 10 years of research and development, he applied his skills and knowledge to create ULU Yoga. Disappointed by the lack of quality in other YTT programs, (“People spend thousands of dollars on a YTT and can’t even teach at the end!”)
Edward designed a more professional, academically grounded system focused on achieving measurable results and fostering genuine growth in wellness and spirituality. Over the following decade of running his own YTT courses, ULU Yoga has earned a near-perfect rating and an outstanding reputation for producing high-quality instructors who are fully prepared to pursue real teaching opportunities after graduation.
